The degree and coping of premenstrual syndrome in girls high school students

Abstract
This study was to investigate the degree and coping of premenstrual syndrome in girl¡¯s high school students. From May 20, 2002 to April 7., 575 girl¡¯s were recruited from girl¡¯s high school and commercial girl¡¯s high school located in Tae-gu.
The PAF(Premenstrual Assessment Form) which was made by Halbreich and Endicott(1982) was used to premenstrual syndrome. To measure the coping pattern of premenstrual syndrome, the tool which Choi & Salmon(1995) developed to measure the coping pattern and efficiency of premenstrual syndrome was used. The data were analyzed by SAS program.
The result of this study were as follows
1. The result of examining the degree of premenstrual syndrome, all subject who participated in the research experienced more than one symptom and the average was 2.00. According to the categories, ¡¯General physical discomfort(2.78)¡¯, ¡¯Fatigue(2.67)¡¯, ¡¯Social Withdrawal(2.43)¡¯, ¡¯Atypical depressive features(2.34)¡¯ were ranked in this order. On the other hand, ¡¯Increased Well-being(1.47)¡¯, ¡¯Impulsivity(1.80)¡¯, ¡¯Autonomic physical change(1.83)¡¯ were ranked in relatively lower degree. According to the each item, negative physical conditions got high marks.
2. According to the result of this study, that shows statistical difference the difference of school, family s income, menstrual regularity, uncomfortable degree on the menstruation.
3. In coping of premenstrual syndrome, the average was 1.99 and ¡¯Active-cognitive coping¡¯ in pattern of coping was the highest.
4. There were the significant correlation(r=0.387, p<0.00l) between the degree and coping of premenstrual syndrome. especially, ¡¯Avoidance¡¯ in pattern of coping was most highly correlated with PMS.
